The EU Delegation visited the city of Cebu on Thursday, July 25, 2019 for a series of meetings intended to reconnect with government partners and industry and of building new partnerships with the local government and the academe.
Led by EU Ambassador Franz Jessen with Amb. Michel Goffin, Ambassador for Belgium, Amb. Saskia de Lang, Ambassador for Netherlands and Mr, Maurizio Cellini, EU Head of Economic Trade, the day’s visit was facilitated by Agustin Palao -Chairman, Guenter Taus – Vice Chairman, Butch Carungay – Director, and Patricia Mendoza – President & General Manager of MATIQ HUB, a non-government organization made possible through partnerships with HOLICOW PH, DOST 7 and DTI 7. MATIQ HUB is a sustainable and multidisciplinary enabling space for Cebu’s creative community which focuses on Materials, Art, Technology, Innovation and Qi.
The meeting with the newly elected City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Cebu province Governor Gwen Garcia commenced the morning agenda respectively, followed by a discussion over lunch with Engr. Jesus F. Zamora, Jr., DOST 7 Assistant Regional Director, Engr. Tristan Abando, DOST 7 Provincial Director and industry partners represented by Brian Connelly, President of the American Chamber of Commerce – Cebu Chapter, and Jurgen Pesch, General Manager of Christ Philippines Inc. A visit to the HoliCOW Gallery Store showroom showcased a portfolio of community crafted products while the meeting after with Atty. Augusto Go, owner and President of the University of Cebu, presented the UC BEEHIVE – an ongoing project between the university and 11 partner institutions located in five European countries as well as in Indonesia.
The presscon held at MATIQ HUB at 5:00 in the afternoon culminated with the signing of partnership between MATIQ HUB and the Italian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Inc., (ICCPI). This gave the members of the media the opportunity to further discuss on the partnership and purposes of EU Delegation, ICCPI and MATIQ over some wine & cheese during the MATIQ trademark W(h)ine & Cheese event. James Freney, ICCPI Director and Board Member graced the entire day’s events and represented the Italian Chamber on behalf of Sergio Boero, ICCPI President.
The EU Delegation expressed its interest to further its programs of collaboration, like the GSP+, with the government as a whole and its agencies and open avenues of partnerships that are mutually beneficial for both the EU, the local government, its industries and with the academe.
